- A defect in the CFTR gene causes cystic fibrosis
- Children who inherit a faulty CFTR gene will have cystic fibrosis
- Each parent has to be a carrier of the gene
- If a child only inherits one faulty CFTR gene, they will not have cystic fibrosis, but will be carriers of it
- The only two risk factors are family history and race
